glass-imploder

Why implode glass?

RecyColl are trying to find innovative solutions to reusing products.  Our aim is to try and use as much as possible on island.  Before we had the glass imploder, all glass was shipped to Tiree and then on to the mainland for processing.

What do we do on Coll?

The Glass imploder is located in a small hut behind the island’s fire station where the island’s bottles are converted into a useful product.

Glass aggregate is being produced to required quality standards.  It can be produced free of contaminates--such as the collar you see on the neck of wine bottles--and be safely used as part of a concrete mix.  It can also be used as backfill for pipes or as a heat sump in a green house

How can I get involved?

  • Please take your clean jars and bottles--not Pyrex--and put them in the bags beside the fire station.  We are working on a new collection point--the skip at the back of the fire station--and will give updates when this is ready.

  • Please remove metal lids from glass jars, screw caps and corks.

  • If you would like to help prep the glass ready for imploding, please let a member of RecyColl know.

  • If you would like to purchase cullet or get a sample, please speak to a member of RecyColl or pop into the old Hall to place an order.

  • 15kg bags are currently being sold for £2.50...a lot cheaper than buying a similar product and shipping it onto the island!
